POLYGONAL MODELING
Polygons are widely used in Computer Graphics and video game industry. The most common techniques are:
High Polygon
High density mesh for the best visual quality. Organic modeling for movies, visual effects, graphic arts...
Low Polygon
Low density mesh for the best realtime efficiency. Video games and interactive 3D visualization...
Hard Polygon
Technical modeling, machinery, architecture...
Digital Modeling with polygons
Polygons allow to build quickly a basic shape with a good visual quality, and modifying it easily.
They are very good at setting up exploratory models and producing quality pictures.
In addition, the meshes can be subdivided and then serve as 3D data for engineering, 3D printing or even clay milling.
However, polygons are not as accurate as Nurbs and can't be used to mill metal stamping or injection molding tools.
Some examples of polygonal models I rebuild from pictures. I targeted a high level of detail to illustrate the possibilities of polygons.
An actual polygonal modeling job.
